The Glycemic Index ranks the foods on how they affect the blood glucose level. The Glycemic Index measures how much the body glucose increase in two or three hours after eating. It is all about foods high in carbohydrates. The Glycemic index uses scale from 1 to 100, which indicates the rate at which 50 gm of carbohydrates in a particular food is absorbed into blood stream as blood- sugar. The GI Diet helps to stabilize blood- sugar.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF GI DIET

 

Disease prevention: High blood glucose level may promote the disease like diabetes by increasing oxidative damage to vasculature and also increase in insulin levels, which are used medically to treat some forms of diabetes. In some regions, people eat high GI foods such as potatoes and rice, but without high level of obesity. The high consumption of legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables, which are advisable for GI diet, has lowered Glycemic effect in individuals. Thus mixing of low GI carbohydrate diet with high GI carbohydrate produces moderate GI values.

Weight control: In human trails, it is typically difficult to separate the effects from GI and other potentially confounding factors such as fibre contents, palatability and compliance. In the study, rats fed on high GI diet were 71% fatter and had 8% lean body mass than low GI group. Insulin levels were significantly higher and triglycerides (fats) were three fold greater in high GI fed rats. They also suffered from severely disorganized architecture and extensive fibrosis.

Endurance Athletes:

The marathoners, before a competition, they try to balance the consumption of low GI food to maintain the constant energy level and energy spikes. In short, we can say that,Lose weight without going hungry. Increase in Energy level.Lower risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Recent scientific evidence has shown that individuals who had followed a low GI diet over the years were at significantly lower risks for developing coronary heart diseases and diabetes than others. Continue consumptions of high GI carbohydrates would likely have led to the development of severe metabolic abnormalities and obesity. Thus, the above conditions may aggravate by over consumption of high GI food.
