Low GI diet is very beneficial for many people suffering from various ailments. People that have diabetes, heart ailments and obese people have benefited from low GI program. A low GI diet essentially consists of foods that are low in GI. Thus they release less amount of glucose when an individual eats it. GI refers to glycemic index that is a tool to measure carbohydrate contents of the food. A GI chart is made of the carbohydrate foods that can help individuals following low GI diets to select right kind of food. A new study has also found that there is a link between a low GI diet and eye disease related to AMD that is age related eye macular degeneration.

Latest research on AMD

 

Just as good food is very important for healthy heart, liver, brain and skin. It is also important for the eyes. Eyes along with the body, ages lose its effectiveness. It is found that the nutrients in orange, green and yellow products can slow in progression of AMD. They mostly include dark leafy vegetables and fruits that produce antioxidants. According to the latest research, the retina has among the highest supplies of blood and nutrients that also includes glucose. It is dependent on the adequate glucose delivery system to maintain its physiological function. It is because that glucose metabolizes in retina efficiently. This study was carried out among 526 persons who have no pervious history of AMD. Asking the food frequency questions validated the study. In this study it was found that if the total carbohydrate intake is held constant then there are more chances of eyes being getting old is reduced by two folds. This diet taken was a Low GI diet. Thus, the persons prone to having AMD can control and delay this phenomenon's for its disability and its cost.

Benefits of Low GI diets

Thus, it is concluded that persons who are suffering from AMD and the persons who are prone to suffering the AMD disease can greatly benefit from having low GI diet. They can not only keep their eyes in good health but can do that for the long time.
