There is a growing awareness among the people about Glycemic index. A glycemic index is a measure to check the intake of bad carbohydrate in the diet. The method ranks the carbohydrate food that is taken by the person and immediate rise in body glucose level is noted. A less rise in immediate body glucose level is benefited as it restricts the body to burn off the food quickly. A program was formed to make the consumers to know what kind of food is healthy. It is followed in countries like European, U.K, Canada and USA. It was done by labeling a symbol to the products in the market that are eaten on daily basis. This helped the buyers immensely in buying the right kind of food that is good for their health.

Promoting GI symbols:

Many countries are now having GI symbols on their food products. To be eligible for the right to paste a symbol, the company must submit its food product to an accredited laboratory. There are strict food norms and guidelines, which are determined by the dieticians and nutritional experts involved in the program. After the company gets a green signal from these laboratories the company gets a license to use the GI symbol on their approved products. Governments of various countries are thinking of applying regulations for using the GI symbols to the food products in their countries. A study carried out by the Glycemic Index agency revealed that there is growing awareness in the peoples mind about GI index and GI symbol. 86% of the respondents were aware of the symbol and 57% of the respondents were ready to switch to GI symbol products from the non-symbol products. It has also been reported by the companies that use of GI symbols have grown with good sales.

Its benefits:

The GI symbol program was largely successful going by the results of the survey. This means that people are aware about foods in the market that are healthy and thus have options to eat healthier food rather than having junk food to gratify their hunger. The GI symbol has now become an important tool that has a lot of influence on the peoples mind while buying the food products.
